Interpretive Summary: Campylobacter is the leading cause of bacterial foodborne illness worldwide. Typically, most campylobacterioses are associated with Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli. However, many ‘emerging’ Campylobacter species are or are suspected to be human pathogens, with many emerging species recovered from food, water or food animals. Three Campylobacters, C. lari subsp. concheus, C. sputorum bv. sputorum and C. volucris have been recovered from livestock, shellfish or human clinical samples. The fourth, C. fetus subsp. venerealis is a significant cattle pathogen and abortifacient. Although the chromosomal sequences of representative strains for these organisms have been determined, complete genomic data for the type strains of these four campylobacters were not available. Data on the type strains are critical, since the type strains are often used as reference strains by clinical and health laboratories, and genomic data can be used to develop and improve typing and culturing methods. This study describes the whole genomic data for the type strains of these four campylobacters.

Technical Abstract: Genomic data are not available for the type strains of Campylobacter lari subsp. concheus, Campylobacter sputorum bv. sputorum and Campylobacter volucris. Additionally, only a draft genome is available for Campylobacter fetus subsp. venerealis. This study describes the complete whole-genome sequences of the type strains of these four Campylobacter taxa.
