The articles making up the special issue are highlighted in this editorial. The subjects of the papers in this issue range from fungi, plants, microbes, livestock, and humans and the research methods used span basic and applied science. Ergot alkaloids can be viewed as toxins or potential medicines. Problems associated with ergot alkaloids can be thought of as problems that only affect certain regions of the world. Thus, the overarching emphasis of this editorial is that the issues and interests associated with ergot alkaloids are actually large scale and worldwide in nature. This editorial and this special issue will be of benefit to any individual interested in learning more about ergot alkaloids. Technical Abstract: Research evaluating ergot alkaloids can be basic and applied. Many types of research perspectives are necessary for understanding of ergot alkaloid function and implemen-tation of findings. The focus of this special issue includes original research and review articles that highlight benefits and detriments and successes and failures involving ergot alkloids around the world with deference to regional distinctions. Research models range from fungus, to plant, to mammal and the ergot alkaloids produced by Claviceps. and Epichloë spp. of fungi are all part of this special issue. We all focus on how ergot alkaloids influence (positive or negative) our individual situation. There is a benefit to this shared interest even if the issues with ergot alkaloids don’t directly overlap. |
