Interpretive Summary: Zygophyllum coccineum (ZC) is a plant with many healing properties. In this study, ZC extract was used to reduce swelling in rats induced with arthritis. Paw volume and arthritis index scores were tested in the rats in this study. Joint tissue and hind limb muscle examinations revealed the effectiveness of different doses of ZC extract on restoring good cells. The good cells help with cartilage growth and muscle structures. The size of bone cells that break down bone tissue and programmed cell death rate was examined. A dose of 15.6 mg/kg of ZC extract, decreased programmed cell death rate of bone cells compared to the control. The study revealed the protective effect of ZC extract on bone cells. ZC extract controlled the flow of inflammatory cells of the immune system. The safety of ZC extract on kidney and liver functions was tested. ZC extract can reduce swelling in an induced rat model.

Technical Abstract: Zygophyllum coccineum (ZC) is a plant with many medicinal applications. This study examined the anti-inflammatory activity of ZC in rats. In the present study, ZC extract was tested in rats induced with arthritis. Paw volume and arthritis index scores were tested in all examined animals in this study. Joint tissue and hind limb muscle examinations revealed the effectiveness of different doses of ZC extract on restoring good cells that help with cartilage growth and muscles structures. The size of bone cells that breaks down bone tissue and programmed cell death rate were examined and revealed the protective effect of ZC extract on bone cells. The results at a dose of 15.6 mg/kg of ZC extract significantly decreased programmed cell death rate of bone cells compared to the control, demonstrating a protective effect of the extract. ZC extract regulated the secretion of pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cells of the immune system. Biochemical tests indicated the safety of ZC extract on kidney and liver functions. ZC extract has efficient and safe anti-inflammatory potential in an induced rat model.
