Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Rice (Oryza sativa) being one of the most important foods for human consumption was the first crop whose genome was completely sequenced over two decades ago. O. sativa has one of the smallest genomes sharing synteny with other monocots and is a model for numerous important food crops and ornamentals. To date, highly accurate genome sequences of thousands of rice varieties are available, and more varieties will be rapidly sequenced with affordable cost worldwide. Over a thousand rice genes have been cloned and the molecular mechanism for respective traits, and their interactions are being uncovered. As a result, accurate and user-friendly genetic markers have been developed and have been used by geneticists and rice breeders to reduce the time required for new rice variety development. The advent of machine learning and artificial intelligence coupled with remote sensing, multispectral imaging, and methods to collect, store, analyze and share electronic data and information including the use of unmanned aircraft system (UAS) are a path forward for rice genetics, genomics, and breeding.
