Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The National Coordinated Soil Moisture Monitoring Network is an initiative begun in 2018 to bring together subject matter experts on soil moisture to better inform earth observations related to soil moisture science. In the proceeding years, a strategy document has been developed and adopted by NOAA as a national strategy, an installation protocol was developed and numerouse field days and training courses were conducted. There has been much progress, but a review of current needs and future directions should be outlined for proper planning to occur. Engagement with tribal groups, public and private interest groups and commercial data providers are on the horizon for this effort along with improving technical aspects of data production and value added products for better decision making.
