Slide 10. The erodible nature of some of the soils in the St. George cotton growing area can be seen in this photo. The scale of individual fields and furrow lengths in the Australian cotton growing area is generally much larger than for furrow irrigated fields in the US. The siphon tube in this photo is toward the small end of the scale for individual furrow inflows in Australian furrow irrigated cotton. Note also the turbidity of the inflow water, which contributes to surface sealing in the furrow, restricting infiltration.
