Dr. James Russell, rumen microbiologist with the U.S. Plant, Soil and Nutrition Research Unit, was selected as the 2005 USDA-ARS North Atlantic Area Senior Scientist of the Year for his outstanding research on the role of microbes in ruminant nutrition.
- Dr Ed Buckler, plant geneticist with the U.S. Plant, Soil and Nutrition Research Unit, received the Herbert L. Rothbart Outstanding Early Career Research Scientist Award for 2004 for his research on pioneering genetic approaches that let researchers identify individual genes controlling complex agronomic traits. This is the highest honor USDA-ARS bestows on young scientists within the Agency.
- Dr Ed Buckler, plant geneticist with the U.S. Plant, Soil and Nutrition Research Unit, was awarded the US Presidential Early Career Award in Science and Engineering in 2005.
- Drs. Leon Kochian and Ross Welch, plant physiologists with the U.S. Plant, Soil and Nutrition Research Unit, were plenary speakers at the 15th International Plant Nutrition Colloquium held in Beijing, China, on September 14-19, 2005. The colloquium attracted 1200 scientists from over 50 countries and addressed both basic and applied research issues related to plant nutrition and plant responses to the environment.
