Robert Proctor has worked as microbiologist at ARS in Peoria since 1990. After receiving his B.S. in Biology from the University of Victoria in British Columbia and Ph.D. in Plant Pathology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, he conducted postgraduate research on molecular genetics of mycotoxin biosynthesis in the fungi Fusarium and Penicillium. Currently, Dr. Proctor is a member of a team of scientists that conduct research on development of methods to reduce mycotoxin contamination in food and feed crops. The goals of his research are to elucidate the genetic bases for variation in mycotoxin production in Fusarium, to determine the roles of mycotoxin production in the ecology of Fusarium, and to identify fungal genes that regulate mycotoxin synthesis as well as genes that fungi use to protect themselves from mycotoxins that they produce. He uses comparative genomics, phylogenetic, and molecular genetic methods to address these objectives.
