Research Project: Identification and Characterization of Genes that Controls Nutritional Quality Traits in Fruits and Vegetables

Location: Plant, Soil and Nutrition Research

Project Number: 8062-21000-050-014-A
Project Type: Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 20, 2022
End Date: Aug 19, 2024

Objective:
The objectives of this cooperative research are: 1) to identify genes critical for nutrient metabolism in vegetables and fruits; and 2) to examine the mechanism underlying their actions for developing crops with improved nutritional quality traits.

Approach:
The approaches include to use QTL-seq analysis to identify QTLs harboring the genes of interest, perform genetic mapping to narrow down the genetic range containing the candidate genes, and utilize molecular, biochemical, and genetic tools for functional characterization of the identified genes. Various omics approaches will be carried out for global changes and generating new hypotheses. Both traditional breeding and genetic approaches will be employed for potentially developing traits with enhanced nutritional quality in crops.
