Research Project: A Novel Genetic Strategy and Mechanism to Improve Tomato Fruit Yield

Location: Plant, Soil and Nutrition Research

Project Number: 8062-21000-050-031-I
Project Type: Interagency Reimbursable Agreement

Start Date: May 1, 2024
End Date: Apr 30, 2027

Objective:
1) To examine the effects of SlOr family genes on fruit production via generation of tomato CRISPR/Cas9 knockout mutants; 2) To elucidate the mechanisms underlying the Or-affected fruit set; and 3) To investigate the association of SlOr family gene expression with fruit set in tomato germplasm.

Approach:
Transgenic lines will be generated via A. tumefaciens-mediated transformation. Both conventional molecular and biochemical approaches will be employed for functional studies to understand how the Or gene regulates fruit set.
