Research Project: Nutritional Interventions to Prevent Chicken Breast Myopathies

Location: Quality and Safety Assessment Research Unit

Project Number: 6040-41440-003-011-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jul 1, 2024
End Date: Jun 30, 2026

Objective:
1. Investigate the effects of nutritional interventions modulating candidate physiological pathways and severity and incidence of chicken breast myopathies. 2. Investigate the effects of nutritional interventions modulating candidate physiological pathways on the gut ecosystem and their interactions with chicken breast myopathies.

Approach:
Approaches will be to investigate whether differential feed formulations, (e.g. high- and low fat contents, high and low antioxidant contents, etc.) conditions will influence in inducing woody breast (WB) myopathy in broiler chickens. For this, differential diets will be fed to broiler chickens and WB scores will be determined at the terminal stage of growth. To determine the effect of differential fat contents, blood and various organs including breast muscle, intestine, and liver and will be subjected to determine contents of blood- and tissue-specific biomarkers. Meat samples will be subjected to determine meat quality properties (Objective 1). Collected intestinal samples will be subjected to analyze gut ecosystems, including morphology, gut health condition, and microbiota(Objective 2).
