We have produced novel prebiotics from orange peel and observed that they extend the shelf life of probiotic bacteria in synbiotics. Some pectic-oligosaccharides and xyloglucan-oligosaccharides also have anti-adhesive activity against E. coli and Campylobacter jejuni. These oligosaccharides have potential to prevent food-borne pathogen attachment to epithelial cells and urinary tract infections. Low molecular weight pectins also have anti-cancer and immune-stimulation activity, and are currently used in clinical trials to prevent congestive heart failure via a galectin-3 mechanism. |
