Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Agricultural Research Service scientists in Athens, GA., have been granted a patent on a method to detect contaminants on food surfaces with imaging systems. Using a real-time imaging system in the processing plant, researchers Bob Windham, Kurt, Lawrence, Bosoon Park, and Doug Smith in the ARS Poultry Processing and Meat Quality Research Unit have been able to detect feces and recently ingested materials on poultry carcasses with accuracy approaching 99 percent under laboratory conditions. Now, they are hoping to test the system by early 2004 under commercial conditions in a poultry processing plant.
