Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Stakeholder engagement is a key aspect of applied science. Effective communication is essential between researchers working to develop solutions, end users in industry who will apply those solutions, and consumers who will ultimately benefit. A continuing challenge to this communication is the reliance on technical jargon. Although jargon and technical terminology can serve as a useful shorthand for subject matter experts within a given field, its use for broader science communication can have the opposite effect, particularly where jargon usage is not merely opaque, but misleading. This presentation will provide a discussion on jargon, language, and terminology for effective science communication to scientists and to the public. The wider panel conversation will focus on the impact of word choice for technical and lay audiences that will facilitate understanding, support collaboration, and ultimately improve technology transfer to stakeholders in industry, academia, and regulatory bodies.
