Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: In this issue of Gastroenterology, Yang et al report the results of a series of studies investigating the effect of longterm high dietary fiber (20% cellulose plus 20% guar gum) intake in both spontaneous transgenic (Apcmin/+) and carcinogen-induced (azoxymethane) mouse models of CRC. The authors convincingly show that this mixed high-fiber diet increases colorectal tumor development in a microbiome dependent way. While the levels studied here are much higher than most Americans are actually consuming, this research may help to establish an upper limit to the recommended daily intake of soluble and insoluble fiber.
