Chris Maragos has worked as a research chemist at ARS in Peoria since 1992. After receiving his B.S. in Biochemistry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and his Ph.D. in Environmental Toxicology from Cornell University, he conducted research at the National Cancer Institute on drug discovery of compounds that release nitric oxide. Dr. Maragos is a member of a team of scientists that conduct research on the development of new technologies for measuring fungal toxins (mycotoxins) in commodities and foods. The goals of his research are to facilitate the efficient diversion of fungal toxins from commodities and foods as a means for reducing the exposure of people and domestic animals to these toxins. Meeting these goals involves the development of new tools for recognizing natural toxins using immunology, synthetic biology, and analytical chemistry.
